In 2021, the airport's passenger traffic exceeded half a million people.

Near Izhevsk is also the Pirogovo sports aerodrome, which together with Izhevsk Airport is the only operational civil airport in Udmurtia.

In August 2025, the residents of Udmurtia voted to name Izhevsk Airport after the weapons designer Mikhail Kalashnikov.
