About the airport

Servicing an Aurora Airlines aircraft operating the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk — Shakhtyorsk — Khabarovsk flight at Shakhtyorsk Airport

Shakhtyorsk is the airport of the urban-type settlement of the same name in Sakhalin Oblast. It was established in the 1940s during the Japanese occupation of southern Sakhalin as a military airfield. Civil passenger transportation has been carried out since 1957.

In Soviet times, up to three flights a day were operated from the airport to Khabarovsk, two to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, and one to Zonalnoye.

In 1992, regular flights ceased, but the airport was not closed completely, serving as a reserve for flights to Okha and the Kuril Islands. Regular flights resumed in 2000. At various times, the airport was used by the airlines Dalavia, Dagestan Airlines, Amur Airlines, and Aurora. Flights were operated to Sovetskaya Gavan and Vladivostok.

Currently, Aurora Airlines operates regular flights from Shakhtyorsk Airport to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.
