Air Tanzania is the national Tanzanian airline headquartered in Dar es Salaam with a hub at Julius Nyerere Airport.
Airline route network as of December 2019
Established as Air Tanzania Corporation in 1977 following the bankruptcy of East African Airways, it has been a member of the African Airlines Association since its inception. The airline was 100% government-owned until 2002, when it was partially privatised under the country's Structural Adjustment Programme. After privatisation, the government reduced its stake to 51%, with the remaining shares sold to the South African airline South African Airways.
The partnership lasted about four years and resulted in losses exceeding 19 million US dollars. The government bought back the shares in 2006, and since then the airline has been 100% government-owned. For many years, the company served various domestic, regional, and intercontinental routes. Although it is the national carrier, its share of the African air transport market declined from 19.2% in 2009 to 0.4% in 2011.
In 2016, the Tanzanian government under President John Magufuli initiated a new programme to revive the national carrier. The government acquired two new Bombardier Dash 8 aircraft for the national carrier, which were delivered to the country in September 2016. In December of the same year, the president announced that four more aircraft would be purchased for the national carrier, with delivery scheduled for June 2018. According to reports published in August 2018, Air Tanzania's market share for 2017 rose to 24% from 2.5% the previous year.
