Emirates is one of the largest airlines in the world, based in Dubai. It was established in 1985 by the senior leadership of the emirate of Dubai to develop tourism and infrastructure in the United Arab Emirates. It is a subsidiary of The Emirates Group. This is the largest airline in the Middle East, operating more than 3600 flights per week to over 150 destinations in 80 countries across six continents. Cargo transportation is carried out by the airline Emirates SkyCargo.
By the metric of passenger-kilometres, Emirates ranks fourth in the world among airlines operating scheduled commercial services, fourth in the number of passengers carried on international flights, and second in the amount of cargo carried in tonne-kilometres. From March 2016 to February 2017, the airline operated the longest non-stop commercial flight from Dubai to Auckland.
In October 2008, Emirates transferred all its flights at Dubai International Airport to Terminal 3.
Emirates is one of the few airlines that operates a fleet consisting exclusively of wide-body aircraft manufactured by Airbus and Boeing. As of January 2019, Emirates is the largest operator of the Airbus A380 with 115 aircraft, and the airline has ordered another 52 of these aircraft. Since its introduction, the Airbus A380 has become an integral part of the Emirates fleet, operated on long-haul routes with high passenger loads. The airline is also the largest operator of the Boeing 777 in the world, with 174 aircraft in service.
